Together for our Cities

Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk

The challenges of climate change can only be met by working together - which is exactly what the Klima.Werk aims to do:

At Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk, cities are working together with Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband to promote a sustainable use of rainwater as a vital resource.

Consequences of climate change

Working together for sustainable urban development and climate resilience

Climate change is a huge challenge for the world and a particular threat to the cities in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The increase in extreme weather events and natural disasters caused by a changing climate, like heavy rainfall, dry spells, tropical nights and heat waves, has a growing impact on the quality of life of local communities. Densely populated urban centres like the Ruhr Area are especially threatened by this development. This area has long seen higher temperatures of up to ten degrees Celsius compared to the surrounding undeveloped countryside.

To counteract this development, mitigate the consequences of climate change and make city life more attractive for citizens in the long term, cities in the Emscher-Lippe region have joined forces with Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband in the Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk.

They share an eco-friendly blue-green vision for our cities.

Blue-green vision

The problem is clear: climate change is underway and we are increasingly feeling its effects. But there are solutions for our cities that provide both social and environmental benefits.

Adapting to climate change and its consequences

Creating blue-green urban oasis with tangible measures

36 degrees Celsius during the day, 26 at night, not much rain in some months, too much rain in others: We have been feeling these extreme weather events caused by a warmer climate more and more in recent years, and they will not let up in the future. Cities and their citizens must react to this development and implement adaptation solutions so that heated concrete, dried-out trees and meadows or flooded streets during heavy rainfall no longer impair the quality of life of local communities. Cities in the Emscher-Lippe region are tackling this task with specific measures and projects from the Zukunftsinitiative Klima.Werk.

The common goal: to create sponge cities that can withstand extreme weather.

Our climate mission

The climate crisis is a major challenge for both the world and the cities in the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia. But we are strengthening the resilience of our region against climate change.

Everyone is talking about climate change

We're doing something about it.

Together, committed and innovative: As a future initiative anchored in the Ruhr region, cities alongside Emschergenossenschaft and Lippeverband are working together to make climate change a reality. We are doing something about it! As pioneers in climate resilience with many collaborators, we are building adaptive capacity making a difference in our home region and beyond:

From Duisburg to Holzwickede and from Mülheim an der Ruhr to Recklinghausen or Dorsten: cities from the Emscher-Lippe region are already working together on blue-green sponge cities. All cities in the future initiative Klima.Werk are pursuing a common goal:

To protect cities from future climate change impacts and to work towards a climate-resilient infrastructure for the entire metropolitan region through climate change mitigation and adaptation!
